Algy English (algyenglish.com) is an adaptive English practice app used by families, most often set up and managed by a parent or guardian on behalf of one or more children. This page explains what data we collect, why, and what choices you have. If anything here isn’t clear, email support@algyenglish.com and we’ll help.
Algy is operated by Charlotte Ward. For any question about this policy, or to make a request about your (or your child’s) data, contact support@algyenglish.com — that inbox is checked directly, and requests are actioned personally rather than by a support team.
Only an adult can create an Algy account — signing up requires a real email address and goes through our authentication provider, Clerk. A child never signs up themselves or provides their own contact details to us; a parent or guardian creates the family account, then adds a profile for each child from inside it. Everything below about “kid profile” data is data the parent has chosen to enter and continues to control — it can be edited or removed by that parent at any time.
Account data (the adult): the email address used to sign up, and basic authentication data handled by Clerk (our sign-in provider) — we don’t see or store your password ourselves.
Kid profile data: a name or nickname you choose for each child, their chosen curriculum, and their in-app progress — XP, rank, streaks, unlocked themes, and which topics they’ve been practising. We don’t ask for a child’s date of birth, school, address, or any contact details of their own.
Practice content: when a kid profile answers a question, the question text, the answer given, and whether it was correct are sent to Anthropic (the AI provider behind Algy’s question generation and marking) to generate the next question and check the answer. This is limited to the English content itself — no name, email, or other identifying detail is included in those requests.
Payment data: subscriptions are handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your card details — only your subscription status and plan (e.g. which price band, active/cancelled) are kept on our side.
Analytics data (only with your consent): if you accept analytics cookies (see “Cookies” below), we use PostHog to see which parts of the app are used and where people get stuck — page views and in-app actions, tied to a kid profile’s internal ID, never to a name. If you decline, none of this is collected.
Technical data: standard web server logs (IP address, browser type, timestamps) generated automatically by our hosting provider, Vercel, for security and reliability — this is normal for any website and isn’t something we separately analyse.
We use this data to run Algy (generate and mark practice questions, track progress, keep accounts secure), to manage billing, to respond to support requests, and — only where you’ve consented — to understand and improve the app through analytics. Our legal bases (UK GDPR) are: performing our contract with you (running the service you signed up for), our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and working (basic technical logs), and your consent for analytics cookies.
We don’t sell data, and we don’t use it for advertising or ad targeting. The only sharing is with the service providers (“processors”) that run Algy on our behalf, each only getting what they need to do their specific job:
Some of these providers process data outside the UK/EEA (including in the US). Where that happens, they do so under recognised safeguards such as the UK/EU Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent data-transfer mechanism.
We keep account and kid profile data for as long as the family account is active. If you’d like your account and any associated kid profiles deleted, email support@algyenglish.com — this is currently handled as a manual request rather than a self-service button, and we aim to action it within 30 days.
Under UK GDPR you can ask to access, correct, export, or delete the data we hold about you or your child, or object to how it’s used — email support@algyenglish.com for any of these. If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled a request, you can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).
A couple of cookies are strictly necessary and run regardless of consent: one from Clerk to keep you signed in, and one from Stripe if you go through checkout. Analytics cookies (PostHog) are optional and only set once you accept them in the cookie banner — you can change your mind at any time here: .
If we make a material change to how we handle data, we’ll update the date at the top of this page. Checking back occasionally is the best way to stay current.
